Yeast Experiment

We took our Science to another level today. Mrs Abelen-Freeman, our Head of Science at RNLS, showed us an impressive chemical reaction. This is not an activity for home as we had to use hydrogen peroxide. We had to stand back and use our observation skills.

Friday Funday

Our Tamariki had a lot of fun this afternoon. They were able to choose from a range of creative and imaginative activities. We had so many smiles and thumbs up for Funday Friday!!

Celebrating the letter Yy

We all tried some homemade yoghurt today. We ate Greek yoghurt and strawberry flavour! It was Yummy!!!

Dripping Drops

Mrs O'Boyle from the University of Canterbury came and worked with our amazing scientists. We learnt about molecules and surface tension by dripping drops of red water onto a 20 cent coin and made some careful observations.

Kia Kaha - We are all the Same, but Different

We have been talking about how we are all similar and different at the same time. So is Elmer the Elephant by David McKee. We have had fun reading different Elmer stories.
Constable Ken came and talked to us about who we can ask for help if we are lost or scared. We role played what we could do if we got lost in a shop. He suggested that we ask the shop assistant to help us or ask another mother that has small children with her.

Eggsperiments

How can you tell if an egg is raw or cooked? Check out our video. If you spin the egg and then stop it by placing your hand onto the top....a cooked egg will stop spinning....a raw egg will continue spinning.  Why???
The raw egg has fluid inside that keeps moving when it is stopped by the hand.
Try these fun experiments at home and make careful observations, predictions and try to explain why things happen. Be real Scientists!!!
The children made amazing predictions and observations using the scientific knowledge they have developed so far this year.
Our predictions - The egg will turn red because vinegar is an acid.
- The egg will get bigger because the gas bubbles will go inside it.
-The egg will get bigger and explode
-The egg will shrink.

If you are trying the egg in the bottle experiment, parental supervision is a must!
Hint - It helps to wet the bottle neck prior to the experiment.

We had so much fun mixing, measuring, making and eating our upside down cakes under our tables.

U is for Universal Indicator

This week for Science we had a real scientist (Mr Walters) visit us and we got to use real scientific equipment. It was fun to make predictions and observations about what we saw happening.
We made some universal indicator using red cabbage water. When we put acid onto it, it turned red and when we used alkaline it turned blue. You could try these experiments next time you have red cabbage for dinner.
